PI: Tutorial:Adding External HDD or USB storage without auto script

Post by Korkapotomis » Fri Jun 16, 2017 4:52 am

Some people don't like the automatic external drive script so here is a link to an alternative way to setup your Pi to read Roms, media, snaps, and wheel art from an external source. With this you can use your sd card and use an external source to store and runs games and media from.

Also if using an external HDD you will want to modify your /boot/config.txt and add the line max_usb_current=1. this boost the usb power output so most 2.5" externals should work. 3.5" will need its own power cource. I'm using a 4tb and it works good without any issues.

To modify your /boot/config.txt go into your Pis terminal and follow these few steps:
Type:
sudo nano /boot/config.txt

Then add this line somewhere at the top:
max_usb_current=1

Then press:
Ctrl+x

Then type:
y and hit enter

Type:
sudo reboot

Done.
Your pi should restart and you should be good to go now and pushing more juice

Also you can manage the power and spin down with this.
